This bust of Pope Innocent X is in the Doria-Pamphilij Gallery in Rome (not my photo I'm afraid) - the gallery of the family that was brought to fame, money, and power by his rise to the office of Pope. This is another piece by Bernini, and the one that really cemented my respect for him. Look closely at it: there are creases in his gown, where it was folded and not ironed out properly. Wrinkles in his forehead, crows feet around his eyes. One of the buttons hasn't been put all the way through the hole. There's a bump under the skin under his right eye. He's got big ears and his beard is unruly, not growing in everywhere he wants it to. If this wasn't made of marble, it would be breathing.
