The Staatsbibliothek (aka the "Staabi," or State Library) designed by Hans Scharoun. The outside is hideous: it looks like the Jawa's sand crawler (from the first Star Wars movie) embedded in a mass of lower buildings. And inside there are certainly plenty of Sixties and Seventies touches that I could do without, but the light and space are fantastic. And Technical Services is laid out so books are processed in a straight line from the loading bay, recieving, cataloguing, labeling, and out to the shelves. What an incredibly novel idea!
